Started Dogs

Quinebaug Kennels is offering for sale:

DeCoverly bred English Setter "Quinny"

Quinny is a 15 month old blue and white female setter. She also just spent over 2 months with us and is really excelling in her training. She is obedience trained on and off leash to heel, whoa, kennel and come to voice and/or whistle and she is electronic collar conditioned. She works the field with tremendous drive, boldness and style. As you can see from her photos, her points are exciting and intense. She is even retrieving birds to hand naturally and loves her job in the field. Like Banner, she is roaded twice a day on the ATV and is extremely physically fit. She is socialized daily with packs of dogs and has that truly wonderful DeCoverly temperament. She has a higher energy level and would be best suited in a household with an active lifestyle and for someone who truly wants a hard working field dog. We really like Quinny's enthusiastic attitude and her fantastic drive in the field. Quinny is for sale as an advanced started dog with lots of bird work, steadiness to bird flush, starter pistol training, quartering drills, and field drills. Price upon request, please contact DeCoverly kennels (570) 378-3357.

DeCoverly bred English Setter "Banner"

Banner is a 15 month old Tri-color male setter. He spent over 2 months with us and is well started in his hunting training. He is obedience trained on and off leash to heel, whoa, and come. He works the field with finesse and grace. He is still a bit immature (as young male setters often are) and he continues to gain confidence and develop into a wonderful bird dog. As you can see from the photos, his bird points are not really intense yet, however as he matures, his style will continue to improve. He is electronic collar conditioned and is a lovely, gentle dog. He is back at DeCoverly kennels for a break in his training, and he will come back to Quinebaug for more work this spring. He is for sale now as a well started dog. Price upon request, please contact DeCoverly kennels (570) 378-3357.

"Bella"
2 year old English Setter

Bella was raised in a home with children. She is house broken, crate trained, socialized, has a wonderful temperament and loves other dogs.

Bella is an upland hunting machine. She has lovely, stylish, intense points with a high straight tail. Bella is one of Jennifer's personal guide dogs for upland hunting. Bella is a great addition to our training program as she is superbly steady to flush and shot, and she honors so steadily that she is a great brace mate for our younger dogs in training. Bella will continue to train, hunt and live at Quinebaug until the perfect buyer comes along who would like not only an incredible field dog, but a loving house companion and friend. Please email or call Jennifer if you are interested Bella. She is being sold as a finished dog.

"Mandy"
14 month English Springer Spaniel

Mandy was just purchased by Quinebaug Kennels at 14 months. She was too much dog for her elderly owner who bought her from a breeder. Mandy's hobby was chasing cats and chickens and finding moles. We tried her on birds, and she gave us rope burn trying to chase them. We realized that is a pup with great drive and heart, and she needs to be trained with lots of foundation obedience, manners, and field work.

We plan to put at least 2 months of training into her before she will be sold. She is a powerhouse and will make an outstanding field dog. She will be whistle and voice trained, steady to flush and shot, e collar conditioned, house trained, and socialized. Mandy is spayed. If you are looking for a young dog that will be ready to hunt, Mandy will prove to meet your expectations.

"Piper"
3 year old German Shorthair Pointer

We got Piper in September of 2006. He was a family pet whose owners just could not keep him. He comes from outstanding bloodlines with both sire and dam achieving their AKC Master Hunt titles. Piper had never hunted before, so I tried him on birds and he pointed every bird I put out. Since then, Piper has had 4 months of intensive training. He is extremely athletic and focused in the field. He is whistle and voice trained, e collar trained, steady to the bird, flush and shot. He retrieves to hand. He is not a huge running dog, so he hunts wonderfully within sight. Since he was raised in a home, he is a kind and gentle dog that is very well socialized and people oriented. I have been using Piper to guide with this season, and he has been gaining lots of field experience. Piper will make a wonderful pet and field companion for someone who is looking for the best of both worlds. He is an adult neutered male.

"Hi Jennifer:

I wanted to let you know how Piper is doing. Right from the first night we hit it off - he is getting along fine with my Brittany and laying down on my lap in the recliner. Butch let him on the leather couch with him, that's where they sleep. I took him on a hunt just two days after taking him home. He is awesome - it's like we have been together all his life, he follows command joyfully. We put out 14 pheasants. Butch found 2, Piper found 12, we shot all and Piper retrieved all to hand. I will continue with the yard work as he seems to enjoy working for me. We have an orchard at the end of my road that I take Piper to so he can run. I want to thank you for all the work you put into Piper - it really shows. He is a beautiful dog, a great bird dog, and is a welcome member of our family.

Thank you, Richard Swenson"

Congratulations to his happy new owner.  Piper has already warmed a new spot on his couch as well as his heart!

"Joe"
3 year old German Shorthair Pointer

Joe was purchased to be one of my personal guide dogs. He is a 3 year neutered male from very good bloodlines. He is a lot of dog! He is a power house full of drive, energy and lots of birdieness. Joe was raised in a kennel out west, and was purchased to be my guide dog. I have since had him as a house dog part time. I have been using Joe this season to hunt upland birds, and have my labs flush the birds he points. He is trained to be steady to the flush and shot. He will retrieve to hand. He honors other dogs nicely, and will retrieve when I release him to do so. While he hunts relatively close, he covers a lot of ground. His points are extremely intense. It is awesome to watch him work. He will only be for sale to the right person who likes hard working dogs with lots of power and desire. He is way too much dog for the average hunter!

Information About Our Started and Finished Dog Program

Quinebaug Kennels only occasionally offers started to trained dogs for sale. Some of these dogs we purchase as puppies so that we can specifically offer our clients trained dogs. Puppies are certainly a lot of work, and purchasing a Quinebaug Kennels trained dog means you have a well balanced, socialized, highly trained dog that is ready to work. Alternatively, we sometimes rescue unwanted sporting breeds. Typically these dogs are a product of being "over dogged" by their previous owners, and we acquire these dogs in hopes of giving them a better life. These dogs love to hunt, but their owners did not have the time or knowledge to handle them. We change these dogs. We socialize them extensively, instill manners and discipline, and apply countless training hours to restructure them into happy, obedient companions capable of being wonderful house pets and hunting dogs to the right person. Our expectations for all of these dogs are to become pets and working dogs...Not kennel dogs!

So, what truly is a started vs. a finished dog?!?

Since we are perfectionists and highly professional at Quinebaug Kennels, we have a truly high standard when it comes to selling dogs. Our definition are as follows:

Started Dog: A pup that has had at least 2 to 4 months of training and is at least 8 months old. This pup has been well socialized, crate trained, fitness trained, has had on and off leash obedience and is conditioned to the remote electronic collar. This hunting dog pup has been on birds and has been conditioned to at least a starter (cap) pistol. Cost Average $3500 to $4500

Finished Dog: A dog that is over 2 years of age and has completed at least one full hunting season with plenty of bird work. This dog has all of the training of a started dog, plus it has been through a conditioned retrieve program and delivers to hand, for retrievers the dog handles blind retrieves on land and water, for pointers the dog honors brace mates. These dogs are all steady to flush and shot. They have trained in a variety of conditions on hundreds of birds, wild and pen raised. This dog typically has well over a year of intense training and would be a well polished, impressive and stylish dog in the field. Cost $6500 and up

Please contact Jennifer by email for more information on any of these dogs. The cost of these dogs reflects the time, training, and efforts that we have put into them. We hope to find owners who will appreciate and love them, and enjoy the benefits of professionally trained dogs.
